Important Questions to Ask Before You Become an Egg Donor

Have you watched someone struggle with infertility? Do you want to help others build a family? Whatever your reasoning, egg donation is a wonderful gift to a couple who wouldn’t be able to have a child without your help.

Still, egg donation isn’t for everyone. If you’re considering becoming an egg donor, we've put together a list of some frequently asked questions to help you figure out if you're a good candidate.

Can I Become an Egg Donor?

First and foremost, you must be wondering if you fit the criteria.

To maximize success rates, an egg donor must be between the ages of 21 and 29, with a body weight within 20% of the normal height/weight ratio.

Additionally, you must successfully pass various screening tests and have a satisfactory physical exam (including Pap smear) to be qualified to donate.

What Does the Egg Donation Process Entail?

First, potential egg donors must complete our Egg Donor Application to ensure they are suitable candidates for egg donation. Once the application is approved, potential donors are scheduled for an appointment here at ACRM to begin the screening process.

This screening process includes:

  • A physical with one of our nurse practitioners
  • A full review of personal and family medical history
  • Genetic counseling and testing
  • Ovarian reserve testing
  • Drug and nicotine screening
  • FDA-mandated infectious disease testing
  • Psychological testing and counseling

Upon passing the above screenings, your eggs will be frozen and become part of the ACRM Egg Bank!

How Long Is the Egg Donation Process?

The whole process can be completed in under two months – starting with an egg donor application, followed by screening, and concluding with egg retrieval. Subsequent egg donation cycles can be completed in under one month.

How Often Can I Donate?

We currently permit up to five donation cycles per donor. After the fourth donation cycle, you have the option to preserve your eggs for personal, future use at no charge. Your eggs will then be stored for up to five years.

Is My Egg Donation Anonymous?

At ACRM, we take the confidentiality of our egg donors seriously. Should you choose to donate with us, your egg donation will be completely anonymous.

Am I Paid for Egg Donation?

We know that egg donation requires a true time commitment — you may need to take time off work, studying, and your personal life to become an egg donor. As such, compensation (up to $8,000 per donation) is offered after the first appointment and is distributed incrementally after each step is completed. Since we currently allow up to five donation cycles per donor, you may earn up to $40,000 in one year!

Bonus: We’ll also offer up to $500 for any donor that sends us a referral.

While this compensation may be an added perk, remember that you’re helping others achieve their dream of having a baby! If you’re interested in learning more about our Egg Donor Program and would like to read more about a previous ACRM egg donor experience, click here!
